Have you ever wondered why children never sit still? Have you noticed they have the need to move, fidget, explore, touch and interact with everything around them? Does it feel like they’re not listening and not doing as they are asked? That's because this is exactly what their bodies are made for!!
Children, particularly in the early years, are not designed to sit down and listen to instructions. They've got to move and explore their environment with their body and all of their 7 senses! Click here to read more about the senses. Although it may not be obvious, they pay far more attention than we think. They are constantly curious and interested in their environment but the only way to learn more about the world around them is to experience it with their bodies.
Think about the brain as a galaxy with billions of stars. The brain cells need to be connected in order to create strong pathways with each other, which allows the brain cells to communicate and process information from our senses. Connections are made through movement, new experiences and countless amounts of repetition! Did you know that 90% of the neural pathways in the brain will be set for life during the early years of childhood? These pathways between the brain cells determine not only how children think and learn but also will shape who they become, their passions and interests and are one of the most important foundations in the formation of individuality.
Movement is one of the top priorities in the brain during the early years of children's development. The brain will always prioritise movement before thinking until the movement becomes fully automated, when the child is able to move/perform the certain task without thinking about it.
The Little Gym Leeds is a place where children explore by moving in new and different ways, take risks and build strong bodies all whilst being exposed to a rich multi-sensory environment.
We know at The Little Gym Leeds how important it is for children to be barefoot, aiding strong and healthy foot development.
Did you know a child’s foot actually contains no bones at all but consists of cartilage?? This mass of cartilage ossifies (strengthens) to become all 26 bones of our adult feet. This process is only complete in their late teens.
You may have also noticed that babies are born with a pad of fat in the arches of their feet, which makes them look flat footed. The leg and foot muscles are not yet strong enough to properly support their arches when they begin to stand. By the ages of 2 to 3 the arch has usually begun to develop.
How can movement and bare footing help?
From their first step to their cartwheels, our feet take responsibility of carrying all of life’s adventures. The more movement they can do barefoot, the more we can strengthen the muscles and help to build our bone density through weight bearing activities.
We know as soon as the shoes and socks are put on they come straight back off! We may think it's a cry for attention or rebelling from being told what to do but children love the freedom and the comfort of being barefoot. This also allows the child to observe their toes and see the movement their feet can do which also develops their body awareness.
Movement is highly beneficial for the growth of strong and healthy feet. Bare-footing allows the children to have a better grasp on the floor as they feel the floor temperature, materials and all different kinds of textures beneath their feet during motion. It provides stability and spatial awareness to manipulate their body around obstacles to avoid tripping or falling.
Movement is also vital in helping the arch develop therefore it can function properly. The arch of the foot is designed to bare all weight from the human body as well as absorbing all the stresses that are placed on us from day to day. Without the arch this can cause negative effects on the bio-mechanics of our bodies.
At The Little Gym Leeds we encourage all of our children to be bare foot in the gym not only to prevent slipping on the equipment but also so that they can benefit from all of these amazing stimuli!
Don't panic there are still 7 weeks left until Christmas but with Halloween and Bonfire night done it's on to the big one and the festive period is just around the corner. This can be a very stressful time of year for a lot of parents. What do I buy?? Who do I buy for?? How much will it cost?? It seems these days we've forgotten what Christmas is all about. At The Little Gym Leeds we think it shouldn't matter how much you spend on gifts but rather how much time you spend with loved ones. Children don't need mountains of toys, despite what they might tell you! In fact research suggests that children who have less toys become much more creative and that too many toys are actually bad for children. Read the article here.
If you think your little ones already have more than enough toys, why not get them something a little bit different this year. Why not buy them experiences? These can have a munch more profound affect on their development and has a generally positive effect for both the giver and receiver.
Check out this article on why experiences can be better and less stressful for everyone than gifts.
If you think buying an experience sounds better than a gift then why not buy them gymnastic classes with us? You might not know this but we offer gift vouchers that can be a great gift this Christmas! Our age-appropriate children's activities are Serious Fun! We use movement, music, learning and laughter to nurture ongoing skill development and boost self-esteem. Your child progresses at their own pace, having fun and building confidence as they develop new skills. Explore the range of classes we offer at The Little Gym of Leeds.
To find out more about our gift vouchers be sure to speak to a member of the team next time you're in. If you're new to TLG then don't hesitate to give us a call on 0113 3359915 or email us on firstname.lastname@example.org.

With one holiday now complete, the next holiday season will be upon us before we know it! We can't wait for our Christmas and New Year Camps, we always have so much SERIOUS FUN. We will be running our holiday camps over the festive period and we'd love your little one to join us for some festive fun.
What happens in our camps?
Come rain or shine, during the school holidays The Little Gym Leeds camps provide children with a fabulous variety of fun, activity, learning and creativity. Themed sessions that change every week, stimulate physical and motor-skill development with games and gymnastics, all in the care of our qualified and dedicated team of instructors.
Our camps will be running on 27th and 28th December and then on 2nd, 3rd and 4th of January. We have camps available for 3 hours, 4 hours or 7 hours (5 years and over only).
Mornings 9.30 - 12.30
Lunch Club 12.30 - 1.30
Afternoons 13.30 - 16.30
Whist our camps provide some serious fun for your little ones, it's also a great time for parents to have some time out to themselves. Due to OFSTED requirements parents are not permitted to stay once your little one has gone into the gym and sometimes if parents do stick around it can make other children unsettled as they are wondering why mum or dad isn't there too. That's not a bad thing though, go and enjoy a coffee, read a book or treat yourself to something in the January sales!!
3 Hour camp = £25 members / £35 non-members
3 Hour camp + Lunch club = £30 members / £40 non-members
7 Hour camp = £40 members / £50 non-members
***OFFER*** BUY 2 AND GET THE 3RD HALF PRICE!!!
Limited Spaces Available
Don't hesitate to book in for these amazing camps! Spaces are limited and they do fill up pretty quick so why not call us on 0113 3359915 or email us on email@example.com to reserve your space today!
We are excited to announce a slight change to our Parent Child program here at The Little Gym Leeds. Starting from 1st November you will be able to bring your little one to as many classes as you like and with classes running everyday apart from Monday, that's a lot of serious fun to be had!
That's right. Unlimited classes for all children aged 10 months - 36 months. Yayyyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Current research suggests that young people are not getting enough physical exercise and this makes us sad! We know the importance of movement in child development and to help combat this we are changing the way we do classes for our younger members.
Check out the article here.
The way it works:
You will be booked into your regular class as normal, but if you want to attend any additional classes you can book these up to a week in advance. You will always need to book in advance and not just turn up! We are continuing to grow and classes are getting full, so we need to make sure we have room for you before you come!
Don't forget all out other great Member Benefits!!
Any questions as always please don't hesitate to speak to one of the team. If you're new to The Little Gym and would like to find out more then give us a call on 0113 3359915 or email us on firstname.lastname@example.org.
Here at The Little Gym we love seeing the children in our weekly classes smiling, laughing and learning. We also love seeing the children building confidence and friendships, then taking that confidence beyond The Little Gym. One of our 3D learning aspects we believe in is building Social Skills and what better way to combine the two by inviting a friend to share the growth.
We recently asked for reviews from parents who have visited the gym and what really stood out was how much our members value the classes with regard to their child's social development, and how we provide opportunities for children to interact and build relationships with others in a supportive environment. When a child becomes confident in their physical abilities and social interaction in class, this confidence carries over in to their daily lives outside of The Little Gym as they grow up!
Here are some top tips on encouraging your child's social development!
Our current learning unit is all about developing social skills and working as a team. Positive social skills can be learned and improved upon throughout childhood. Programs at The Little Gym help children grow and develop social skills in a fun, nurturing environment that provides opportunities for learning. Games are used to enhance social development and the non-competitive nature of these encourages children to play with each other rather than compete against each other. Children learn to become more considerate towards each other, more aware of their feelings and the feelings of others, and more willing to co-operate and support one another.
Children love to have friends in class, whether these are friends they have made here, or friends from outside of The Little Gym! So, November is our Bring a Friend Month and you should now have you very sought after Bring A Friend Invitations which are available for our wonderful members; you!
Here’s what you need to do…
Step 1: With your little one, pick a friend who would love to experience a TLG class.
Step 2: On the invite, fill in the details of your regular class, day, time; this will be the class your friend is invited to join.
Step 3: Make your friend very happy and hand them the invite. They get to join you for 1 class during the month of November
Step 4: Have your friend give us a call to book in for the class written on the invite
Step 5: Meet them at The Little Gym and have Serious Fun!
Here comes the fun part…
If your friend loves it as much as your little one, they have until the end of November to join and they'll receive 2 weeks of the year free! You will then receive a £20 credit on your account for referring them!
Don’t forget ... If both you and your friend are unable to make your regular class, you’re still able to switch to a different day you’re both able to attend. Please check with one of the team before handing out the invite, just to make sure there’s space for you both.
We can't wait to welcome our members and their friends to join us during the month of November for some Serious Fun!
If you can believe it it's almost half term for all your little ones. If it's their first time at school I'm sure they'll be ready for a much needed break. Whilst a lot of places close for half term, The Little Gym Leeds will be running classes as normal.
If you are going away please make sure you cancel your regular class so you can catch it up at a later date. Unfortunately if you don't attend class without cancelling you will lose your session.
If you're not going away then here's what's happening during the half term:
For anyone attending classes throughout half term all the teachers will be dressing up for Halloween so we encourage the children to do so also!!!! Bearing in mind they will be doing gymnastics, might be worth a thought when it comes to outfit selection!
If you are going away we hope you have a lovely time and we'll see you when you get back!!
To book into to any of the Halloween events be sure to speak to a member of the team next time you're in or give us a call on 0113 3359915 or email us on email@example.com.

Funny what? Funny Bugs! That's what we call our three year olds here at The Little Gym. Being a Funny Bug is a very important time for your little one! They are about to take a huge leap and they will be about to participate in a structured class all by themselves, without their parents.
Physical exercise has never been more important than today. Did you know young children need at least 3 hours of play a day? With tablets and smartphones children have more and more excuses why not to be outside (or inside) playing and being physical. Have a read of this article which explains why movement is so important for your little ones here.
From Bugs (4-10 months) to Super Beasts (30-36 months) the little ones have their parents in the class with them. But when they get to three they get to have serious fun all on their own. This is a great time for your little one to develop a strong sense of self-confidence and eliminating their fear of failure is paramount in these classes.
Don't worry if your Funny Bug isn't quite ready to explore by themselves just yet. If they need you to be in the gym still then that's ok. You are more than welcome to stay in until they feel confident enough to go off on their own. You'll be surprised how quickly this can happen and before you know if you'll be watching from the lobby whilst enjoying a complimentary tea or coffee.
Once they discover the joys of independence they're eager to do what all the big kids do. This is great, however they are still at an age where the best way for them to learn is through play. That's why the Funny Bugs classes have just the right mix of free-play and structured activities. Having the Funny Bugs listen to the instructor explain what they'll be doing through the use of imagination means they need to listen and watch even if just for a minute or two. This life skill really prepares them for going to school and listening to the teacher.
All of our Pre-K classes (3-5 years) have a teacher:child ratio of 1:6 which allows everyone to get just the right amount of attention. Their learning environment must be one in which structure, learning, movement and play can co-exist together. At The Little Gym we are constantly keeping up to date with research into child psychology and the way in which children learn best (through movement). This is why we have recently changed our Funny Bug structure to align with current research.
The new structure means less time sitting down and instead incorporating as much movement as possible. The first 5 minutes is spent as exploration of the gym and the last 5 minutes are spent having fun with the balls. Research suggests 50 minutes is the most appropriate time frame for a 3 year old to partake in any kind of structured activity. As instructors we can vouch for this! The structure of our Funny Bugs class looks like this:
- MOVE AND LEARN - this is the first 5 minutes where children can explore the gym around them. We always have a 1:6 instructor:child ratio so there will still be lots of imagination going on during this time. We also introduce the Funny Bugs to a skill which they can come over and try if they want to. It's crucial they know that there is nothing in this first 5 minutes that they NEED to do. The research suggests that this exploration period at the start helps increase their attention span and allows them to better retain information. It's also a great time for them to develop their independence, work on decision making and motor planning.
- STRUCTURE - The next part of the class is where we group our Funny Bugs and take them around the 3 stations of the gym. Here we are getting your little ones used to listening to instruction which is a very hard skill for a 3 year old. We use lots of imagination to peak their curiosity and keep them engaged throughout. Getting them to listen to a teacher explain what they're going to do, even for 60 seconds is a great life skill and is really going to prepare them for school!
- BALL ACTIVITY - This activity changes each week. Sometimes it'll be a structured activity and other times they're encouraged to have independent free play. Ball activities are crucial for Funny Bugs to develop their gross motor skills, manipulative skills, co-ordination, depth perception, peripheral vision and so much more!
As well as the physical side of the classes The Little Gym also incorporates 3-dimensional learning to all the classes. We have
If you've heard of The Little Gym before then you might know that we offer non-competitive gymnastics to children aged 4 months - 12 years old. You may think that if you sign up for classes your little one will learn how to forward roll or handstand and that's about it.
But did you know that being a member means so much more. We wanted to put together a list of all the things included in your annual family membership. As well as allowing your children to attend amazing classes it entitles you to:
